Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued by Bahamas Meteorological Department
Nassau, July 9, 2025 – The Bahamas Department of Meteorology has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning effective from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM local time, Wednesday, July 9, 2025. This warning covers the central and eastern Greater Bahamas , as well as northern Abaco including the surrounding waters and smaller islands.
According to the latest information received at 12:12 p.m. EDT, lightning detection systems, radar, and satellites indicate a line of moderate to severe thunderstorms moving toward and across the warning area. This extreme weather activity is being driven by a shift in atmospheric pressure and high tropical humidity in the region.
This weather phenomenon is expected to be accompanied by:

Heavy rain

Frequent and dangerous lightning

Strong winds

Possibility of hail

The possibility of water spouts (whirlpools) or even tornado activity

Risk of local flooding due to extreme rainfall
The Meteorological Department warned vessels in the warning area to seek safe harbor immediately , and residents on land were advised to stay indoors and away from windows . It is strongly advised against sheltering under trees or being in water, as both can be deadly conductors of lightning.
This warning was issued by the duty weather forecaster, SW Hunter II , and will continue to be updated as weather conditions develop.
