Trump Federalizes 2,000 National Guard in LA, Gov. Newsom Opposes

Washington DC, ASNews.web.id — President Donald Trump signed an official memorandum ordering the federalization of 2,000 National Guard members to be deployed to Los Angeles. The move, according to the White House, is considered a crucial effort to "combat the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester" in the area.

The decision immediately drew a backlash from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who publicly expressed his opposition. Newsom said such federal intervention would only make the situation worse, erode public trust in government, and potentially escalate social tensions that have been simmering for months.

“This is not a solution, it is a way to escalate,” Newsom said at a brief press conference, stressing the importance of community-based and local approaches that focus more on dialogue and building trust between communities and law enforcement.

The White House, on the other hand, argued that the situation in Los Angeles had reached an alarming level, with increasing lawlessness and disturbances of public order. In an official statement, the federal government asserted that this action was taken to maintain national stability and protect civilians from potential further violence.

However, political observers and security policy experts warn that unilaterally federalizing the National Guard in states without the governor's approval could set a dangerous precedent, both legally and in terms of governance.

The controversial move adds to a long list of tensions between the federal government and the state of California, which have been at odds during Trump's presidency on issues ranging from immigration to environmental policy.
